Kips Bay Decorator Show House 2014

It’s time again for the Kips Bay Decorator Show House to be unveiled.  This year I enjoyed most of what I saw but I had a distinct feeling of deja vu. Much of the design had a 60’s and 70’s vibe. Of course, what goes around always comes around in the design world.  Carrier and Company designed the above room with metallic wallcoverings and smoked mirrors.

Blue is back in a big way with shades ranging from deep indigo to gorgeous peacock blue greens. The room above by Markham Roberts is an intimate space with velour sofas and texured pillows.

Window treatments are always of utmost interest. The fabrics chosen and how they are employed fascinate me. This year there is a little bit of everything, solids, sheers, patterns and graphics. Where panels are used they are lush and full. Panels start at the ceiling molding and all touch the floor and a few of the longest have a definite break at floor level. Juan Montoya used sheer banded shades and panels in a graphic fabric on French Poles.

Alexa Hampton wins for drama with indigo blue lambrequins trimmed with a wide ivory banding. The shape is very soft with a turkish feel.

Draperies all touched the ground to some degree. The wall above is covered in a peacock blue fabric and trimmed with a burlap tape. This room was designed by Mendelson Group. Don’t you love the patterns and textures?

This dramatic room by Vincente Wolf is treated with a wide sheer shade. Several rooms in the Kip’s Bay Decorator Show House also had sheer shades with over draperies.

In the kitchen area, Mathew Quinn designed the valances to be reminiscent of organ pipes as a nod to St. Patrick’s Cathedral just across the street.

Architect William Georgis also used St. Patrick’s Cathedral’s deceased Cardinal Spellman as his inspiration. Lush reds and opulent fabrics make this room a showstopper.
