Perfect Bay Window Hardware Part 3

July 3, 2018

At last, we will look at our options for creating fully operational bay window hardware.  Sometimes the best solution is for treatments that can stack completely on either side.

Rod and Rings

Serendipity does happen. In the image above, the size of the bay allowed for a french pole to be installed with only one center bracket. The angles of the bay are bent into the rod and traversing rings is easy because there are no  brackets in the angles. We can bend angles in the 5/8″, 7/8″ and 1-1/4″ size rods. As long as the distance between the end and center brackets is well below the full bracket to bracket maximum this can work. Of course the weight of the drapery is also a factor.

Bypass Bracket Placement

Solid Elbow in angle of bay windowWith the use of solid splices as shown above, the available standard 135°angles can be used to bridge the gap between the front rod and the rear rod. (We do not recommend using the adjustable corner pieces for this application because of the uneven surface at the joint.) Our elbows are secured with set screws, which is great because a bracket can be used on only one side and not the other.

The issue with this arrangement can be the use of a bypass bracket at this point, which is very close to the corner. Bypass rings must be used with the correct bypass bracket. Even then, the rings will tend to stack up as they turn the corner as the treatment is opened. This causes the rings to tip back and forth and they can hit the bracket as they pass.

Offset bypass bracket on bay window

The best way to design your bay window hardware is to have the corners either bent or welded and mitered. Mount your bypass bracket 6” or so away from the corner. That 6” will allow more room for the drapery to be stabilized before the bypass bracket. Also if the rod must be spliced for shipment, it can be done at this point. Always specify a tube splice for this option. Be aware that a bypass bracket will not hide the splice. Below is a great example of this technique.

Traversing Track Options

And of course, we also carry traversing track in white, brown and black. The tracks can be bent easily into bay window situations and are perfect when full functionality is critical. Tracks are also great for larger window situations when a lot of fabric has to traverse angles.
